Reported January 22, 2007 Lipo Side Effects CHEVY CHASE, Md. (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) -- Sick of vowing to lose weight at the beginning of each year? Want to take the easy way out with liposuction? You may want to know the possible consequences before you go under the knife. Avid runner Debbie Kubiet had liposuction to smooth out some trouble spots and, in the process, got a little more than she bargained for. Six months after liposuction, Kubiet's bra size grew from a 34B to 36C. "I woke up one day, and it was like, 'My bras don't fit correctly,'" says Kubiet of her experience. When she told Eric Finzi M.D., Ph.D., about her breasts, he revealed she wasn't alone. In fact, Dr. Finzi, a dermasurgeon at the Chevy Chase Cosmetic Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, published a study revealing significant breast enhancement naturally occurs in 43 percent of women who undergo liposuction. Women who experienced breast enhancement in Dr. Finzi's study said their breasts grew by one to two cup sizes. "When you remove fat [in the stomach and waist], the other hormones in the body are able to increase the breast size," Dr. Finzi tells Ivanhoe. Kubiet has come to terms with her new assets, even though it means she has to pay more for expensive jogging bras. "It doesn't matter," Kubiet says. "I haven't noticed that I'm in any type of discomfort or pain when I'm out running." Before going under the knife, it is important to consider the many risks associated with liposuction. Dr. Finzi says patients who are under general anesthesia are more prone to problems than those under local anesthesia. "Anytime anyone goes under general anesthesia, there's a chance they won't wake up," Dr. Finzi says. Other possible side effects of liposuction include blood clots, scarring, depressions or divets in the skin and numbness that can last for months. Dr. Finzi says benefits associated with liposuction include lower cholesterol and decreased back pain. He also says liposuction is for sculpting, not weight loss, so those looking to shed inches aren't going to lose more than a few pounds.
